A "cut system" is a practice employed by some Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) programs, where students are evaluated at various stages during their college career. The faculty then decides if the student has earned the right to continue in their program. While forcing classes to fill a quota is not common currently, these evaluations can lead to some students being asked to leave the program, essentially 'cutting' them.
- University of Michigan: All majors must pass a second-year evaluation to enroll in specific upper-level performance courses. Juries are required each semester to pass certain courses.
- Carnegie Mellon University: Students are required to attend a conference and portfolio review with their faculty at the end of each semester. Failure to meet expectations may result in recommendations to explore other options.
- NYU- Steinhardt/Tisch/CAP 21/New School: These programs are secretive about their jury systems and any cut systems they might have in place.
- University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music: Formerly had a notorious cut system, now discontinued for musical theatre. Admittance has become stricter, and there are "boards" (juries) that students have to pass.
- Penn State: Students must pass specified juries in both voice and dance at the end of each semester, and must pass all dance, acting, and musical theatre specific courses with a C or higher.
- Ithaca College: Clear expectations and requirements of juries. Freshman and sophomore BFA musical theatre majors are required to participate in a singing review and vocal juries in the School of Music starting in the second semester.
- Boston Conservatory: Students must earn promotion to the third year through a jury evaluation or face artistic dismissal.
- Syracuse: While there's been criticism about their cut system, there seems to be no formal evaluation system. Grades are likely a determining factor in a student's continuation in the program.
- Oklahoma City University: Students must attain a certain level of performance, determined during Jury Examinations at the end of each semester during junior and senior year.
- Elon University: Does not have a cut system. However, their process for being accepted into the program is very strict.
